Weekly Newsletter 1-5-2024

Dear Lighthouse Families,

What a pleasure it was to see all of you and your students return to school on Wednesday. While it can be an adjustment for our youngest students, it is amazing to see how quickly everyone settles back in with friends and the usual routines at school. The weeks leading up to the break were a whirlwind of activity, and this time of year is such a productive and consolidating one as new units of study are underway and the foundation has been laid for deeper learning in the different subject areas.

Similar to our commitment to students’ learning, we are dedicated to the growth and development of our faculty and staff. About a decade ago, Nantucket Lighthouse School launched its Educational Speaker Series to provide free, accessible professional development for island educators, families, and community members. Each year we bring locally and nationally recognized speakers to the island to lead workshops and lectures on timely topics related to education and parenting. Over the years, we have hosted myriad speakers who are at the top of their field. This is such a unique opportunity for our island community, and we want to make sure families are aware of our offerings. With this in mind, we hope you will join us on January 18 at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the Nantucket High School for a lecture with Dr. Edward Hallowell. Dr. Hallowell is a highly acclaimed author, the founder of the ADHD Centers in Massachusetts, New York, California, and Washington, and one of the nation’s leading experts in the field of ADHD. If this is a topic you are interested in learning more about, you won’t want to miss Dr. Hallowell!

On a different and exciting note, registration for Camp Lighthouse is opening early. Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, January 8. Please visit www.camplighthousenantucket.org for more information. Check your inbox for a special discount code for Lighthouse families.

Warm regards,

Emily

Happy, Thoughtful Kids Grown Here

It was wonderful welcoming families back on Wednesday after our two-week break. Not only did I love reconnecting with students, but as a parent, I was thankful to reintroduce my children to the familiar rhythm and structure of the school day.

For kids, transitions and changes can feel overwhelming. The stability of routines offers them a reassuring framework in which they know what lies ahead and what is expected of them. This sense of predictability reduces feelings of overwhelm and empowers children to navigate their day-to-day lives with more confidence.

Routines aren’t about rigidity; instead, they foster an environment that nurtures your child’s well-being. If you are looking for strategies to make your morning, bedtime, or homework routines more harmonious, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Warm regards,

Julia

Faculty Spotlight

WELCOME

Lilla Sharman

Hi! My name is Lilla Sharman and I am currently a sophomore at Salve Regina University studying social work. I attended Nantucket Lighthouse School from first to 8th grade and then proceeded to graduate from Nantucket High School. I will be studying abroad in Australia next semester so I am very excited to spend my extra time home helping out at the Lighthouse School. I look forward to meeting lots of families and coming back to the school that taught me so much about myself, and others, and the value of learning.
