Dear Families,
Happy spring! While Nantucket’s chilly, blustery weather lingers, the children have been beckoning warmer, sunny days with the joyful artwork that lines the halls of the Chace Schoolhouse. Spring on Nantucket can be sneaky, and it’s not lost on me that I once had to close school on April 1 for snow. All of this to say, keep the warm clothes coming to school. What better way to usher in spring than to celebrate with us at Saturday’s Prom? I’ve been hearing lots of excitement about everyone’s attire, and the fun they’ve had searching one another’s closets, consignment shops, and Amazon (because where else would you find the perfect 80s-themed Prom dress). Prom would not be possible without the vision, countless volunteer hours, and the pavement pounding of our tireless events manager, Jess Torres, who returned from her family leave this week. Jess has pulled out all the stops, and if you are available to help decorate the Nantucket Hotel, please join us at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning. Even if you only have an hour, every bit of help matters and gets us closer to the big event!
Have a great weekend. I look forward to seeing you Saturday night.
Warm regards,
Emily
Happy, Thoughtful Kids Grown Here
“Kids do well when they can.” This simple yet profound assertion by clinical psychologist Dr. Ross Greene is a cornerstone of our approach to understanding and supporting children at Nantucket Lighthouse School.
During moments of misbehavior, adults may think that a child is being intentionally difficult. However, children inherently want to succeed and meet the expectations set for them. If they don’t, Dr. Greene proposes it is due to a lack of skills or unmet needs.
Dr. Greene advocates for a response rooted in compassion and curiosity rather than punishment and consequences. Here at Nantucket Lighthouse School, we are dedicated to fostering the holistic development of our students, nurturing not only academic abilities but social-emotional skills, such as problem-solving, self-regulation, and effective communication.
By approaching children’s challenges with empathy rather than judgment and actively involving them in the pursuit of solutions, we empower our students with responsibility and a growth mindset that not only benefits them individually but enriches our entire school community.
Warmly,
Julia
